Above is the National Theater in the Plaza of Santa Ana, a great spot for drinking outdoors.

At left is the Gran Via, big central shopping district, and below is another view of Puerta del Sol.

Royal Palace & Cathedral

Above is a photo of the royal family of Spain taken during the 1990's. The gentleman in the center is King Juan Carlos I who restored democracy to Spain upon the death of the dictator Franco in 1975. The lady on the right is Queen Sofia, daughter of King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece, and who endowed the Reina Sofia Art Museum. The guy next to Queen Sofia, who looks like he'd be a great basketball player, is her son, who now reigns as King Felipe IV. He acceded to the throne after the abdication of his dad in 2014. (There was some scandal; his Dad was seeing another woman.) The King and his family live in the Zarzuela Palace, away from the center. It would be quite impossible to live in the Official Royal Palace, which is now a major tourist attraction in central Madrid.

Above left are the Gate of Europe towers. Each building is 115 m tall with an inclination of 15°, making them the firs inclined skyscrapers in the world. They are north of the Paseo de la Castellana in North Madrid. Directly to the left is the former passenger terminal at the Atocha train station. In 1992 the terminal was converted into a 4000 sq meter tropical garden. Directly above is a photo of a stairway at the Reina Sofia Centro de Arte.
